monthly retrospectives

the months of: February & March!

School has me in a headlock, so unfortunately I never got around to making the February retrospective…so February and March come together this time around~

6th February

Hayley and a small friend~
Hayley and a small friend

Cross a doll off my wishlist when Hayley arrived! Blanche was one of the Pullips on my original wishlist (compiled WAY back in the day). She came nude and with no stock except for her earrings, which is good motivation for me to starting sewing more doll clothes, I think. (She also came with a small amigurumi handmade friend, which was so sweet of her seller!) On her to-do list is a new wig, although her stock wig is still okay, just a tad tangled.

8th February

a most enchanting soul

Two days later, Viola Emily arrived! And the strangest thing happened.

The moment I took her out of her postage box, I just fell in love with her. I had her sitting in my lap with me for most of the day, or perched next to my computer on my desk, always in my eyesight. I honestly felt like I didn’t want her out of my sight for a single moment. I haven’t been that absolutely enchanted with a doll since I was a little girl! It was so magical.

But, the info! She’s a Seila who arrived with partial stock; she’s missing her book, key, birdcage, and extra hairpiece. I’m going to replace the book and birdcage with new items (I’ve already given her a decorative silver key I’ve just had sitting on a keyring for ages without a real purpose…or maybe it was just waiting for her? ^~), in silver, because I think the silver tone goes better with her stock outfit. I’m not too fussed about her hairpiece, since I think she looks better without it.

Later that day, my brother surprised me with a package from the post office, and these two lovely ladies had arrived! These two are part of something I’m calling Project Junk; expect a long, thoughtful post on this later, but the basics are thus, respectively: Euphoria is a Sfoglia with all stock in a very rough state, and Lunarosa is a Shinku head on an unknown Type 3 body with wrist cracks, and Obitsu curled hands. She came to me with all Moon’s stock, brand new and in excellent condition, and with a fluffy pink wig, which didn’t suit her, so I replaced with a long, straight, wine-red wig I had in the wig box that I’ve been waiting to look good on someone since I received it with Raianne. And speaking of Raianne…

'I rock it. Simple!'
‘I rock it. Simple!’

…she immediately fell in love with Lunarosa’s fluffy pink wig, and commandeered it. And to my surprise, she looks great in it! She’s adorable! Shows that sometimes your dolls know best ;P

Also along with the lovely Project Junk girls came Lilias, a Little Pullip Raphia, much to Lily’s delight. She’s my third Little Pullip and certainly won’t be my last~

22nd February

okay, no more procrastinating.
no more procrastination!

With the beginning of uni looming eerily, I decided enough was enough, and forced myself to sit down and at least (re-)start Jin Li’s faceup. And…I finished it!

done and done!

It only took me about three and a half hours, possibly because I already knew exactly what I wanted it to look like (I went in blind originally, just feeling around, and until I accidentally ended up scratching the sealant, I was really happy with what I had). Also possibly because I was determined to get it done before I had to go off to school and have all my time eaten! It all appeared to go off without a hitch, until…

oh dear.

SIGH. I either wasn’t concentrating or misjudged or something, but I think I held the faceplace too close to the sealant spray stream and overdid it it, accidentally smearing the contouring on the right cheek. Curses. It’s not a huge mistake, but it does annoy me. Oh, well, live and learn. And sand and fix, later on 😛 Not that Lily’s worried…she’s so glad her boyfriend is back!

finally together again!
finally together again!

Thus February ended, and around rolled March…and university, which ate up a LOT of my time. Language courses always do! But a few things of note occurred…

15th March

best. birthday. EVER.

…was my birthday, and my amazing family spoiled me with Kotone (Greggia, new in box), and totally out of the blue, Mai (Ludmila, new in box) arrived the same morning! I was just delighted!

Mai is one of the rare few dolls I don’t think I’ll often redress in any way, although I’ll definitely let her wear the ‘casual’ form of her outfit regularly. I’m a little worried about her boots — they are hell to try and get on, and I’m terrified of her ankle snapping like Iona’s did. I’m thinking maybe of purchasing and customising some cowboy-style boots for her that aren’t such a tight fit. We’ll have to see.

worth every second of waiting 💕⠀
worth every second of waiting 💕

I can still hardly believe I have Kotone. I wanted a Greggia for actual, literal
years, and honestly never thought I’d own her. Every time glance over to my doll shelf and see her, I smile. She’s so cute it’s almost crazy! I love everything about her, from her storm-coloured eyes to her soft brown curls. See, good things come to those who wait! Don’t ever give up~ Not even on the most unlikely things on your wishlist! *^^*

28th March

A prince from a distant land arrived…or Taeyang Wati…just as midterms did! Although I didn’t get to take him out of his box until the 30th, due to studying like crazy. (Fellow deboxers, throw your hands up! 😂) I got him for a bargain price that still makes me giddy when I think about it, which is a double bonus. Something I learned: there is little else as soothing as deboxing and settling a beautiful doll into their new when you’re so stressed out you think you might explode.

a prince?!
a stress-relieving prince, no less!

I named him Lan, after al’Lan Mandragoran late of the Wheel of Time series, which is a guilty pleasure of mine. Not because I think he looks at all like his fictional namesake, but merely because it fits him. Lan is interesting in that’s he’s the first doll I’ve had who hasn’t “told” me his name, but was happier rather that I chose for him. (I’ll do an entry on how my dolls “talk” to me another day; just trust me that it isn’t as silly as it sounds!) Lan is also interesting in that when he arrived, he was waiting for someone else to arrive. Who? You’ll probably find out later this month~

Thus concludes the ☆人形姫☆ Doll Princess belated February & March retrospective! Pshew. My uni work has lessened a little bit (midterms aren’t quite over yet, though!), so hopefully I won’t be run as ragged as I was during February and March for the rest of the year. I realised how bad it is to work myself too hard and to neglect my hobby — it’s not remotely good for my mental health, which leads to badly done studying, anyway. Don’t be a Rin, ladies and gentlemen; remember to take time off and relax doing something you love!

Stay kawaii, lovelies! I have a feeling April’s going to be wonderful~

wise words

to be a doll…

It is an anxious, sometimes a dangerous thing to be a doll. Dolls cannot choose; they can only be chosen; they cannot ‘do’; they can only be done by; children who do not understand this often do wrong things, and then the dolls are hurt and abused and lost; and when this happens dolls cannot speak, nor do anything except be hurt and abused and lost. If you have any dolls, you should remember that.

monthly retrospectives

the month of: January!

It’s February 1st, so let’s take a look back at the previous month, dollwise~

never in a thousand years…

My darling January Vyvyanne arrived! She was an unboxed, original run (2005) Fanatica, and I got her for less than US $100, a stroke of blinding luck that still shocks me to this day. I was worried before she arrived that I wouldn’t truly bond with her, but by the time I was doing her first photoshoot, I was so charmed by her adorable, genki personality! I can’t imagine reselling her, now.

“One problem solved!”

Pullip Batgirl, who I bought pre-loved, unboxed, and with vague customisation ideas about, arrived the next day. I don’t have any photos of her pre-customisation, but her default wig turned out to be exactly what I’d been looking for for Eva!

I approached customisation of then-Batgirl with a sort of ‘go-with-the-flow’ feeling, and by the 7th I had finished her partial re-faceup. Those freckles were a heck of a learning curve! I tried a few methods, but I think these results ended up looking the most natural.

“Tha mi toilichte ur coinneachadh!”

Aaand…finished! Iona Fae MacBeth finally existed in the world on this date! (Yes, that is indeed MacBeth tartan she’s wearing~) I had an almost-complete Craziia stock outfit that was just lying around doing nothing, a very pretty ginger wig (ex-Mitzi, I do think), and a cutely freckled face…she came together almost like a dream. I’ve wanted a Craziia for a long time, but now I have something better: my lovely Iona, who is one of a kind in all the world. ❤

a lovely and strange wildflower

September arrived! She’s a Bouquet and is the oldest of all the Pullips I own so far (released in September ’03! Hence her name…this unnie is just so original 😂) , and I fell in love with her gentle face and sweet eyes almost as soon as I took her out of her box. I suppose it helped that on the day she arrived, I was feeling horribly ill, so I spent some time lying in bed just patting her soft, soft hair to feel better! How to “bond” with your dolls in strange ways 101! 😂

She was unboxed and pre-loved, and her hair was matted (not the seller’s fault! Simply from age and being made curly, as tends to happen even when dolls are stored in boxes), but a slightly evil looking hair-spa that used fabric softener and a surprising amount of elbow grease from yours truly got that sorted out, and she now has her intended fluffy waves. I intend to give her some blonde eyebrows at some point when the weather is sane enough for me to start doing faceups again. She’s adorable, but she really does need them, I think!

January and September!
“Honestly, Temmie, our unnie is just so ridiculous…”

(It wasn’t until literally yesterday that I realised I have two Pullips named after English months…both received during the same month, no less. You all have permission to smack me if any new girls end up named April, May, June, July, or even Augusta! 🤣)

I got two 1/3 wigs for an absolute steal on eBay, one ash-pink with wide spiral curls, and  the other a wavy light cinnamon. Both of them were bought without intention to be used on any certain doll, but when I tried them on my two models, Iona and Raianne (Panda), respectively…they just worked! I was especially happy about the ash pink for Raianne, who I’ve been considering looking for a stock Panda wig for, as nothing seemed to quite suit her (except for my Namu Fai, Jin Li’s wig…or, at least, I liked the way feathered bangs looked beneath her panda hat).

Thus concludes the ☆人形姫☆ Doll Princess January retrospective! One other thing doll-related occurred (or that can become doll-related in the future) that I think is important to note down, though, before I go: I learned how to operate a sewing machine! I hope to eventually be able to make clothes for my girls, and the ultimate goal is to be able to make and sell entire outfits. But we’ll see what happens!

Stay kawaii, lovelies!
